In Chapter 16 Hurston introduces the character, Mrs. Turner. Mrs. Turner clearly suffers from colorism. How does Mrs. Turner’s colorism impact the story? Why does Hurston include this character/story in the novel?

Thursday: Post a response to the following discussion prompt on Flipgrid: Consider Janie’s description in Chapter 11 (on page 106 in my book) of Tea Cake as being a “bee to a blossom – a pear tree blossom in spring.” How does this idea fit with Janie’s dream at the beginning of the novel?
All of the above work should be completed and turned in by Sunday at midnight.
As always, feel free to reach out with any questions. I hope you're enjoying the book! Try to focus on Janie and Tea Cake's relationship and how different it is from the others.

Disclaimer: you've got a lot of work today, sorry!
Thanks to technical difficulties, my blog has not been updating when I thought it was, so we have some catching up to do! First off, we will NOT be Zooming today. The other classes have read chapters 6-9 already, while we've only done 6-7. That leads to what you need to do first: read ch 8-9. These are very important chapters, so please read. Pay attention to what Janie does with her head rag at the end of ch 9. Here are the questions to go with these chapters: tewwg_ch6-9_questions.docx
Please be prepared for a Skills Check tomorrow!
Also, drop your answers to your questions into the Google Drive Folder.
If you finish these chapters and would like to keep going, you can start reading chapters 10-13. You'll need to read these by next Monday anyway. I'll post the questions for these later on.
Miss you guys!

Some notes regarding the rest of the semester...
Firstly, I'd like to say that it's been a pleasure teaching this group of students. I've really enjoyed my time with each and every one of you and I hope we can stay in touch.
Now, for the important message:
This notification is to inform you of the latest information released by the county regarding your child’s grade. As noted from the district communication, students have a choice to accept their grades as of March 13, 2020 as final grades for the 2019-2020 school year OR Continue to earn grades for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year to improve their grade(s). We want to clarify that if a student chooses not to participate, perform or actively engage with his/her teacher(s) and they do not take advantage of assignment opportunities, this will result in their final grade being the grade that they had on March 13th. The only way for the March 13th grade to improve is for the student to submit assignments and participate in the digital learning opportunities made available to him/her by the teacher.
In other words, I will continue to offer assignments that can/will only bring your grade UP at this point. I encourage you to work hard and be productive during this time and I will help you in any way possible.
Please email or text me if you have specific questions regarding your grade.

The audio isn't great, sorry!
"Sweat" will introduce you to an important part of Zora Neale Hurston's writing: dialect. Interpreting what the characters are saying will be tricky at first, but you'll get used to it quickly. A lot of the elements in "Sweat" can also be seen in Their Eyes Were Watching God, so this is a great intro to that.
This is a reminder to please read carefully because you will have a Skills Check on Friday.
I hope everyone is staying home and healthy; I miss you!

- You must have three items for each category (12 total)
- Feel free (in fact, it's encouraged) to add other components, such as your favorite quotes, song lyrics, colors, etc. Anything that personalizes it is great!
